Nut Graf

A journalism term that describes the newsworthiness of a story. Nut grafs are supposed to enhance the value of a story and entices an audience to keep reading an article. A nut graf's purpose is to be the most important part of a story and it also tells readers why they should keep reading.

The term can be spelled nut graph, nutgraph, nut 'graf, or nutgraf and it means "in a nutshell". A nut graf should include the point of a story, why the story matters, and it also provides a transition to the rest of the story if a person wants to read the whole article.
