Final Exam: Extra Credit

1. The man was shoved on to the train tracks by a panhandler when an upcoming train was coming at the same time. The photographer was running along the train in an effort to try to stop the train with the flash on the camera. While he was using the flash the camera was taking pictures and that is how he was able to capture the man stuck on the tracks.

2. The photographer took the photo because he claimed that he wasn't able to help the man himself, so he tried to stop the train and he took the pictures.

3. The photographer should have taken the photo because it is important to get real life events in the world to inform people about major occurrences, even if it is explicit.

4. I do not think the photographer tried his best to save the man because the photographer was very close to the man and saying that he wasn't able to get the man out didn't make sense. If the photographer had enough time to take multiple pictures, he defiantly had enough time to pull the man out.

5. I think it was the right decision to run this image as the front cover of the New York Post because it is important for people to know about important events. If the image wasn't on the front cover, then the photographer probably wouldn't be criticized and the image had people questioning him.

6. Capturing images of life is more important because the photographer is supposed to capture events, not stop them. It is specifically their job to stay out of the way and let fire fighters or police to their jobs and the photographers to only capture the events.

7. Yes, a photographer should involve themselves in things if there is no-one else around to help the victim.

8. I do not think photographers should always avoid events because in the end the stories will be forgotten, and the only think that matters is if victims were helped and the heartache was saved if possible.

9. The second to last post stood out the most because the person supported his arguments and stated the outcomes if the photographer acted differently in the situation, instead of just blowing up and stating random insults with no intelligence.

5 Websites

 Summary:
You can bring anything to life as long as you have a vision for something and a camera. Using a projector to show images on the trees and animals takes a very long time, but the ending results are breathtaking. You literally have to draw in the places you want the image to show which requires a lot of preciseness and patience.

Screen Shot 2015-01-01 at 12.19.46 PM
This is my favorite picture because the main purpose was to make things glow and stand out. the evening light and the silhouettes of the leaves are subtle and the orange in the leaves stand out, representing a simple background.
Photographed by Tarek Mawad

a. I saw how the projectors lit up the bushes and trees. I also noticed the unique camera angles taken to make the film move smoothly.
b. Tared Mawad was the photographer and Friedrich van Schoor was the animator.
c. no story
d. I learned how long it took to film something like this. The people said they were filming and animating in the woods for a while to precisely add details to the animations.

Summary:
Photographer Rachel Sussman captures prehistoric plants, land, and water. She wanted to capture things that people tend not to notice because of our day and age. She wanted to photograph unique things in our world that had never been created in arts or scientists.
pando_4317_txt_800px.jpg

I like that the trees aren't all standing at the same angle (like in most pictures of forests) this creates an abstract picture full of lines.
Photographed by Rachel Susan

a. The website shows a whole collage of prehistoric plants and organisms. The photographer describes how difficult it is to photograph these plants and animals with a connection with them being so old and humans so young.
b. I learned what it's like to capture a multi-millennial life in 1/60th of a second; it's like going way back into the "Deep Time".
c. The photographer describes how to approach the subjects when capturing them.

Summary:
Joe Capra is interviewed about his career in time-lapse photography. He is inspired to film certain places that he had seen online. He goes on a guide to all the places where he was interested in shooting at. You need to plan the location, gear, and what kind of style of shots the you want before you set up the camera for a time-lapse.

Video:
a. I saw the many locations of where the time lapses were filmed in Rio Janeiro
b. Scientifantstic made the video
c. Capra wanted detailed places that he could film at in Rio Janeiro. The places that he planned to shoot at were well planned and most of the video was expected for the photographer. The photographer also spend weeks trying to find the perfect song to match the upbeat rhythm of Rio Janeiro.
d. I learned that it isn't as simple as I initially thought time lapses were to shoot. They take lots of time, money, and planning to getting a quality film.

Summary:
Catherine Panebianco decided to photograph her dog after she notices his aging. She used a smartphone to capture every picture to add a reality to each moment. With a real camera, there wouldn't be as much closeness and casualty that there was with a camera.
diptych_6
This picture is especially emotional because it was one of the last pictures taken in the album. I like how the dog is blurred out to add to the theme of grainy and black and white. The wall has lines leading towards the dog.
Photographed by Catherine Panebianco

a. I saw the images in the album and I noticed that they go in order from the beginning to the end when the dog passed away. A brief description is also written telling the reason why the photographer decided to make this tribute as well as a few important details.

b. I learned how to make your photography more real as well as a few ways to edit images to make them seem dreary; the fact that the images were shot with a phone makes the album more personal and the images were all black and white and slightly grainy, conveying the feeling of sadness.

c. The website relates to photography because the photographer shares a few things that help with the style of photography that is emotional, which is important in drawing attention to your photography.

Summary:
You need to like the place that your shooting at to be able to enjoy photographing it. For landscape photography, people need to have a passion for nature and not seeing it all as a job. The right gear and attitude is vital for shooting in environments that some photographers photograph at. A light camera bag is favored for wilderness photography due to the ,sometimes hours, of shooting in the nature.

I really like the symmetry present in this picture. The time of day makes the contrast just right which makes the stars look more reveled.
Photographed by Yan Zhang

a. The website highlights a photographer's journey and his love for nature that motivated him to pursue the trip to begin with. The site also shows some of his pictures in various places and environments that he traveled to.

b. I learned that the photographer didn't go on his trip because he was a professional photographer, he did it because he has a fascination with the nature and simply wanted to capture it.

c. The whole article focuses how you have to love what you're taking pictures of to actually get anywhere. The photographer also shares what editing he like using the most and what lenses and camera he uses to expose a scene.

4.

- I chose this image because its funny how the image was so famous, and it ended up being fake.
- Marmaduke Wetherell took a fake picture of the Loch Ness monster but was covered by Robert Willson. Wetherell created a fake monster and was claimed as a hoax. This became the start to conspiracy theorists but the pictures became less believable as photoshop days taught people to trust nothing.
- There were pictures of the news papers that were published with the photo on it.

- This was the only picture captured by Marmaduke Wetherell

My group's theme for the mural project is the Texas flag. I took white pictures for the white portion of the flag and other people in my group took blue and red. When all the pictures are gathered, we will organize each picture into the pattern of the Texas flag.

2.

Amy Dang:

I chose Amy Dang because I like how each of her photos capture the light just right. Her pictures are fun to look at and they have a happiness to them. She loves taking candid pictures that capture everything. She is mainly a wedding photographer because she likes the feel of taking pictures in a chaotic, but happy place. By looking at her pictures, you can tell that she likes laughter to show in them.

Amy Dang's style of photography is portrait photography, more specifically, wedding photography. Almost all of her pictures are taken outside in the nature with perfect light exposure. A lot of her pictures are candid and natural giving the picture an almost busy feel, but in a beautiful place.  She does a great job at capturing detail in a chaotic setting while people are laughing or just carrying on their tasks.

Her style of photography is very unique and something I don't usually see in most wedding photographers. The attention to detail is very important especially when taking pictures of people at a wedding when there is a lot of distraction and the setting is super busy. A lot of her shots are very creative whether they're organized or unexpected. She uses a lot of the composition rules, but also breaks them, resulting in photos that are well thought out, but also great to look at.

Lines- The pathway leads to the kids running.

I like the setting and light exposer in this picture.
Image result for amy dang photography
Lines- The lines that the wooden planks and the wall behind the baby all lead to her.

I like how the colors correlate in this picture. The wood is dark and the baby is dressed in white making her pop from the background.

Balance- The people behind the bride and groom are equal on both sides and the subjects in the middle create symmetry.

I like how creative this picture is and, again, the setting it's taken in.

Avoiding Mergers- The subject's aren't awkwardly cut off of the picture.

I like the candidness of this picture and how happy the subjects look.

Rule of Thirds- The subjects are located to the side of the shot, instead of the middle.

I like the light exposer.

Blog #3: Favorite

Finalist
The New York Times Magazine, November 24, The Flight Risk
Photographer: Martin Schoeller
Designer: Arem Duplessis
"For this cover story on the U.S. women’s ski-jumping team, we featured the Olympic hopeful Sarah Hendrickson as photographed by Martin Schoeller. Schoeller captures the competitive spirit of Hendrickson, who wears her competition gear, in her body posture and intense gaze."

The person photographed was completely who she was (being a skier) which gave a reality to the photo. The background is grey which really brings the subject into focus. The boldness of the photo compliments the competitive nature of the skier. The colors chosen are especially vivid in the photo which is appealing to readers. The contrast from the bright red and the grey background brighten up the picture. The goggles frame the subject's eyes which naturally leads a viewer's attention to the eyes which shows the intense mood of the photo. The text used doesn't give away what the magazine covers, therefore leading people to buy it to find out.

American Soldier

A. I think the most powerful image is "A Welcome Break" because Ian is happy when he is finally with his family after being over seas. His mom and dad look happy as they have their arms around each other and his friend has a huge smile on his face.

B. The images show how Ian grew over the years and how he changed from a skinny and scared kid   into older  boy who was less afraid of the his new way of life.

C. The captions help make sense of what the pictures captured in that time. They gave an insight of the situations in the photo instead of leaving the viewers guessing what the picture was really about.

D. Ian Fisher was a high school boy who left home to train for the army. He had many friends and a family who he loved. His first times in training were rough and exhausted him to the point where he just wanted to give up. He had difficulties such as a breakup with his girlfriend and injuries. He was excited when he saw his family and friends after going to Iraq and in the end, he married a girl that made him happy.

E. The verbs are usually written in present tense.

F.
1. There are usually three sentences that make up the captions.
2. The first sentence usually tells who the people are in the photo and where they are.
3. The second sentence usually shows the feelings of Ian or of the others around him.
4. The thirds sentence usually gives a quote on what is said at the moment that the picture was taken.
5. Yes
6. No

G. The photos give the image for the story and the captions show the significance of the images, therefore you can complete a story with good pictures and captions..

H. The captions are very basic and the photos can only show a moment in the scene that is happening in, so if you want detail and a whole scene, then you would have to write a detailed version of what those images and captions highlight in that moment.

Self Portrait & Portraits Part 1

3 Portrait Tips:

1. Looking Off Camera- Have your subject focus their attention on something unseen and outside the field of view of your camera. This can create a feeling of candidness and also create a little intrigue and interest as the viewer of the shot wonders what they are looking at.

2. Experiment With Lighting- Another element of randomness that you can introduce to your portraits is the way that you light them up.

3. Introduce Movement- keep your subject still but having an element in the scene around them move.

Environmental Portraits:

I like how unique this photo is and how it shows that the subject is different than the "typical" boy. I like how he stands out, but the background is interesting too which balances the image.

I like the emotion that is show in this picture, not just the girl's, but the horse's too. The horse and girl have an untold bond that I can just see without being told.

Portrait Assignment Plans:

I wan to take pictures of my sister and dad because it would be easy to communicate with them and I can tell them exactly what I want to see and take pictures of. I want to capture my dad building houses or discussing things with his business partner at their work site, which is in the woods. I want to make almost all of the pictures candid because I want to have my photos portray action and focus (not on the camera) from the subject towards what they're doing. If that shoot idea doesn't work out, then I want to do the shoot with my sister on her trampoline. She does gymnastics and I think it would look really good if I used different movement techniques and rule of thirds in that shoot.
