The Turning Torso
- Santiago Calatrava
- August 27, 2005
- Lilla Varvsgatan 14, 211 15 Malmö, Sweden
- It's public during the summer because it is a residential building, so the building isn't public all year round.
- Not said, but it was almost double than the estimate
- Oresund Bridge met with Calatrava to discuss the construction of the building, wanting it to resemble a twisting human being.
- I picked the turning torso because it is crazy to think that a building that looks twisted is also one of the tallest buildings in Sweden. The building is also beautiful in terms of location, that way it stands out and people can admire it also with the environment. I love the idea behind the construction of this building as well as the history of it.
Habitat 67
- Moshe Safdie
- October 1967
- 2600 Pierre-Dupuy Ave, Montreal, QC H3C 3R6, Canada
- not directly public (residential)
- $22,195,920
- Habitat 67 was inspired my Japanese architecture called Metabolism. The owner wanted a combination of concrete balanced by nature.
- This cluster of buildings makes me appreciate nature and I realize that if people build it right, that a mixture of concrete and nature can look beautiful. The building makes a person look closer and it defiantly caught my eye. I looked at it and thought the building looked very sloppy, but I kept looking at pictures and realized that the architecture is very creative and different.
Guggenheim Museum
- Frank Gehry
- October 18, 1997
- Abando, Bilbao, Spain
- Public
- $100 million
- The building is made of titanium, glass, and limestone and it was said to be the most important building of its time. It is part of the collection of Guggenheim museums and it features art exhibitions.
- I picked this building because I think the way that the glass reflects the light makes it so pretty. I also love that way that the edges curve up into a point making the museum look like a boat. The water and background really lets the building stand out and reflect even better off the water. The colors also compliment the architecture as well as the materials used.
Kunsthaus Graz
- Peter Cook
- 2003
- Lendkai 1, 8020 Graz, Austria
- public
- $50 million
- The architecture combines art, film, media, and design which implements an innovative concept.
- This was one of the most interesting buildings I've every seen as well as the concept of it. The building combines a lot of elements, which attract a lot of different people including me. The lights contrasted with the dark material really makes the Kunsthaus Graz stand out. The building almost looks like a spaceship combined with many other themes, giving the building a unique look.
Cubic Houses
- Piet Blom
- 1984
- Overblaak 70, 3011 MH Rotterdam, Netherlands
- private (residential)
- not mentioned
- the houses were built to represent trees
- I chose these houses because they are really cool to look at and figure out. It took me a while to see that they look like trees, giving the houses a natural theme. The colors and of course architecture is really interesting to look at and I would love to see these apartments in person.
